‘Don’t add fuel to fire’ former Pakistan PM Imran Khan warns

By The South Asia Times

ISLAMABAD - Pakistan's former prime minister Imran Khan on Wednesday expressed concern over the ongoing crackdown against his workers and warned, “don’t add fuel to fire.”

Addressing his nation, Khan rejected government accusations of the involvement of his party workers in the May 9 rampage and attacks on army and government installations and called it a “planned conspiracy” against his party.

“Anyone can tell me a single incident of rampage or violation or taking law into hands during my 27 years of political struggle,” Khan questioned and said he always respect the constitution and law and struggle within the limit of the constitution.

Khan announced to approach the court to form an independent judicial commission to investigate the May 9 incidents across the country as his party has unrefutable evidence of the involvement of unknown people and conspiracy against his party.

“We have proof and will prove that it was planned attacks to defame our party,” Khan said.

He asked the country’s powerful military to stop actions against his workers and said the 13 parties ruling alliance PDM want to push the army and his party into infighting.

“PTI is the most popular party in the country and enjoys 70% public support and the PDM government hesitate to go for elections that is why they are trying to push PTI and the army into infighting,” Khan said.

He added that during clashes on May 9, authorities killed at least 25 of his workers and over 700 wounded, who are still in hospitals.

Khan said that over 7,500 of his supporters were arrested by the government during the last few days including women.

“Never I saw that women are also arrested and tortured, but today it's happening in Pakistan,” Khan said.
