Pakistan Reaffirms Unwavering Support to Türkiye on Cyprus Issue

By The South Asia Times

ISLAMABAD - Pakistan has reaffirmed its steadfast support for Türkiye and the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif said Thursday during a joint news conference with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan in Islamabad, according to Anadolu Agency.

"Pakistan fully supports the cause of the (Turkish Republic of) Northern Cyprus and stands firmly with Türkiye on this matter in an unwavering manner," the agency quoted Sharif as saying.

Erdoğan arrived in Islamabad on Wednesday night for a two-day official visit following visit to Malaysia and Indonesia. Praising the Turkish leader, Sharif described him as “a very important and highly respected leader of the Islamic world.”

“You have led from the front, advocating for the rights of oppressed people, whether in Gaza, Palestine, or Kashmir,” Sharif said, emphasizing Erdoğan’s influence. “When you speak, not only millions in the Islamic world listen attentively, but the entire world takes notice.”

Sharif also expressed gratitude for Türkiye’s consistent support for the people of Jammu and Kashmir, acknowledging Ankara’s firm stance on the issue.

Reflecting on Pakistan’s sacrifices in the fight against terrorism, the prime minister thanked Erdoğan for Türkiye’s solidarity over the loss of lives. He reiterated Islamabad’s commitment to combating terrorism and urged neighboring Afghanistan to assist in eliminating the threat rather than contributing to its spread.

Welcoming Erdoğan on his first visit to Pakistan in five years, Sharif said the Turkish leader warmly welcome by his government and all people of Pakistan .
