ISLAMABAD - Pakistani president Dr Arif Alvi on Thursday announced general elections in the South Asian country will be held on February 8 next year.

In a statement, issued from the President House, said the decision made during a consultative meeting between the President and Election Commission of Pakistan.

“On today's order of the Supreme Court of Pakistan, the Chief Election Commissioner of Pakistan, Mr Sikandar Sultan Raja, along with the Attorney General for Pakistan, Mr Mansoor Usman Awan, and four members of the Election Commission of Pakistan, came to meet President Dr Arif Alvi, at Aiwan-e-Sadr, to discuss the date for holding the forthcoming General Elections in the country,” it said.

“The President heard about the progress the ECP has made in delimitation and for elections.

After a detailed discussion the meeting unanimously agreed to hold General Elections in the country on 8th February 2024,” its announced.

Earlier, the country’s top court ordered the Election Commission to meet with the President and consult the date for the elections.

Pakistan was facing a political crisis as the Election Commission earlier failed to hold elections in the two provinces of the country despite the date announced by the President.

However, this time the Supreme Court of Pakistan warned the electoral body to come up with a final date by Friday, Nov. 3.

The court also said that no delay would be acceptable in the elections.
