The 2022 Winter Olympics kicked off in Beijing with a colorful opening ceremony attended by Chinese President Xi Jinping, Russian President Vladimir Putin, Prime Minister Imran Khan and other heads of state from several countries.

The winter Olympics mega event began with strict health measures because of COVID-19.  Several western countries including the United States boycotted the event and didn't send their diplomats for the opening ceremony.

The opening ceremony began as Chinese President Xi Jinping and International Olympic Committee Chairman Thomas Beach entered the Bird's Nest Stadium, where flags of 91 countries participating in the Games were flying.

The director of the Beijing Winter Olympics is Zheng Yimu, who also hosted the 2008 Beijing Summer Games. At the opening ceremony, 3,000 artists performed at the Winter Olympics, featuring ordinary artists from Beijing and the nearby province of Hebei, entitled "Story of Snowflake."
