Bangladesh sweep Pakistan 2-0 after Taijul Islam’s six-wicket haul

Bangladesh national cricket team completed a historic 2-0 Test series sweep over Pakistan national cricket team after spinner Taijul Islam took six wickets to seal a 78-run victory in the second Test in Sylhet on Wednesday.

Chasing a record 437-run target, Pakistan resumed the fifth day on 316-7 but were bowled out for 328 in the first session despite a fighting 94 from wicketkeeper-batsman Mohammad Rizwan.

The series win marked Bangladesh’s first home Test series victory against Pakistan and followed their 2-0 triumph in Pakistan in 2024, giving them successive sweeps over their rivals.

Rizwan attempted to guide Pakistan to an unlikely win with a determined 166-ball innings and shared a 54-run partnership with Sajid Khan for the eighth wicket.

Taijul broke the resistance by dismissing Sajid for 28 to complete his 18th five-wicket haul in Test cricket before Shoriful Islam removed Rizwan in the next over.

Taijul then claimed the final wicket of Khurram Shahzad to finish with match figures of 6-120 in Pakistan’s second innings. He had also taken 3-67 in the first innings.

For Bangladesh, wicketkeeper Litton Das scored 126 in the first innings, while veteran batsman Mushfiqur Rahim hit 137 in the second innings to help set Pakistan the daunting target.

Pakistan captain Shan Masood admitted his side made “a lot of mistakes” during the match, saying Test cricket was “unforgiving” and required teams to “grind results out.”
