Australian Cricketer Usman Khawaja Retires from International Cricket, Reflects on Career and Personal Advocacy

CANBERRA - Australian cricketer Usman Khawaja announced his retirement from international cricket on Friday, reflecting on a career that spanned more than a decade and included being one of the few high-profile Muslim players in Australian cricket.

Khawaja, who was born in Pakistan and moved to Australia at the age of five, used a press conference to discuss both his career and his outspoken views on social and political issues.

“I understand I’ve spoken about topics outside of cricket, and that leaves me exposed,” Khawaja said. “But I feel compelled to speak up against hate, Islamophobia, and divisive politics. Everyone deserves freedom, and Palestinians deserve freedom and equal rights. That is why I speak out—it’s personal, and it’s about inclusion.”

Khawaja, who has long been an advocate for diversity and integration, highlighted his personal life as a reflection of his message. “I’m an Australian Muslim from Pakistan. I have a white wife I love, and children who are half Australian, half Pakistani. I live the integration I speak about,” he said.

Throughout his career, Khawaja was praised for his calm presence in the Australian middle order, while also facing criticism for his willingness to address issues outside sport, including Australian politics, immigration, and minority rights.

“Not many athletes speak about these issues because it’s easier to stay quiet,” he said. “But when people attack your faith or your community, it becomes personal. I had to use my platform to stand for unity, inclusion, and equality.”

Khawaja leaves behind a legacy not only as a talented batsman but also as a vocal advocate for social justice and multiculturalism in Australia.
