Pakistan army chief meets with UN chief in New York to discuss Gaza, Kashmir issues

By Islamuddin Sajid

ISLAMABAD (AA) – Pakistan Army chief Gen. Asim Munir met with UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres in New York and discussed the current situation in Gaza as well as Kashmir.

During the meeting, Munir reiterated Pakistan's position on the Palestine issue and urged Guterres to mobilize the international community for an immediate cessation of hostilities in the Gaza Strip to prevent a human tragedy from unfolding, said a statement issued by the Pakistan Army's media wing in Rawalpindi on Saturday.

He also emphasized that the only long-term solution to the problem is a two-state solution.

The army chief is in the US for a weeklong visit and has met with senior US officials, including Secretary of State Antony Blinken and Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin.

"(The army chief) particularly shared deep concerns over the plight of the innocent civilians who are being brutally targeted and are not being provided with sufficient humanitarian relief," it said.

Munir also briefed the UN chief on the situation in Indian-administered Kashmir, saying peace in South Asia will remain elusive until a peaceful solution to the long-standing Kashmir dispute is found under UNSC resolutions and the aspirations of the Kashmiri people.
