Pakistan Signs Convention to Join International Organization for Mediation as Founding Member

By The South Asia Times

ISLAMABAD — Pakistan on Friday formally joined the newly formed International Organization for Mediation (IOMed), with Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Senator Mohammad Ishaq Dar signing the Convention on behalf of the country in Hong Kong, Special Administrative Region of the People’s Republic of China.

The IOMed aims to promote peaceful conflict resolution through multilateral dialogue, with Pakistan becoming one of its founding members. The initiative is a significant outcome of the 2nd Belt and Road Forum held in Beijing in 2019, and a result of China’s continued efforts to build a global community with a shared future.

Speaking at the signing ceremony, the Deputy Prime Minister/Foreign Minister lauded the vision and leadership of China in spearheading the creation of IOMed. He emphasized that the organization embodies the importance of multilateralism as a foundation for global peace, development, and cooperation.

“IOMed offers new hope and opportunity for building a more inclusive, just, and equitable world,” Senator Dar stated. He reaffirmed Pakistan’s commitment to being an active and constructive voice within the organization.

Highlighting Pakistan’s dedication to peace, security, and development, the Deputy Prime Minister stressed the need to uphold the UN Charter, implement Security Council resolutions, and respect international law. He pointed to India’s violations of international norms, including aggression against Pakistan and the suspension of the Indus Waters Treaty, as examples of actions undermining peace in the region.

Senator Dar also drew attention to the unresolved disputes in Jammu and Kashmir and the occupied Palestinian territories, labeling them as significant drivers of instability. He reiterated Pakistan’s longstanding position that the Jammu and Kashmir dispute must be resolved in accordance with UN Security Council resolutions and the aspirations of the Kashmiri people.

The IOMed is open to all countries and emphasizes respect for national sovereignty, mutual trust, and legal inclusivity. It seeks to foster international mediation by including diverse legal systems and mediators, promoting dialogue and understanding among nations.
