China condemns new US sanctions on research institutions, vows countermeasures

BEIJING — China on Wednesday strongly condemned new US sanctions targeting certain Chinese research institutions, accusing Washington of politicizing scientific cooperation and pledging to take "necessary measures" to protect the legitimate rights of its research organizations, according to state-run Global Times.

A spokesperson for China's Ministry of Commerce said the United States has broadened the concept of national security by imposing what Beijing described as discriminatory restrictions that undermine scientific exchanges and technological cooperation between the two countries.

"China urges the US to stop smearing Chinese research institutions without grounds, correct its wrongdoings as soon as possible, and provide fair, just, and non-discriminatory treatment to Chinese research institutions," the spokesperson said, adding that Beijing would safeguard normal international cooperation in science and technology.

The statement came after the US Federal Communications Commission expanded its "Covered List" to include advanced robotic devices and connected power inverters produced in foreign countries, citing supply chain and cybersecurity risks. International media reported the measures are expected to effectively block Chinese-made robots and power inverters from the U.S. market.

The Chinese Embassy in Washington also urged the United States to stop what it called the smearing of Chinese companies and warned that China would take all necessary measures in response to actions that materially harm its interests.

Chinese analysts quoted by the Global Times argued the new restrictions reflect Washington's "small yard, high fence" strategy and warned that limiting access to Chinese robotics and power technologies could increase costs and slow innovation in the United States, particularly in artificial intelligence and renewable energy sectors.
