China warns Japan against 'remilitarization' as Tokyo launches new Intelligence Bureau

BEIJING – China on Friday criticized Japan's establishment of a National Intelligence Bureau, warning that Tokyo's accelerating "remilitarization" threatens regional peace and stability.

Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning described the move, officially launched on July 31, as "another negative development in Japan's domestic and external security policies."

"Historically, Japanese intelligence agencies paved the way for the country's full-scale pursuit of militarism and its wars of aggression abroad, committing countless crimes against both the people of neighboring Asian countries and the Japanese people," Mao stated in response to a Global Times inquiry.

The spokesperson noted that in recent months, Japan has used the so-called "national security" and "external threats" as a pretext to accelerate its remilitarization, raising widespread concern within the international community.

Mao urged Japanese political leaders to "draw profound lessons from history and act with prudence."

The new intelligence bureau, which convened its first National Intelligence Council meeting on the same day, represents a significant expansion of Japan's intelligence-gathering capabilities amid growing regional tensions.

China's warning comes as Japan has been steadily increasing its defense spending and expanding its military cooperation with the United States and other allies in recent years, moves that Beijing views with deep suspicion given Japan's wartime history.

Analysts say the establishment of the intelligence bureau reflects Japan's growing concerns over regional security challenges, particularly from China and North Korea, but risks further straining already fragile Sino-Japanese relations.
