China Rejects US Intervention in Venezuela, Says No Country Can Act as ‘World Policeman’

By The South Asia Times

Beijing: China on Sunday strongly rejected the United States’ military intervention in Venezuela, saying no country has the right to act as a “world policeman” or impose its will on another sovereign state, as international criticism grows over Washington’s actions against the Venezuelan leadership.

Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi, also a member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, said China has always opposed the use or threat of force and any attempt to undermine another country’s sovereignty, according to state-run Xinhua News.

He made the remarks while co-chairing the Seventh Round of the China–Pakistan Foreign Ministers’ Strategic Dialogue with Pakistan’s Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Senator Mohammad Ishaq Dar in Beijing.

Wang said the current international situation has become increasingly volatile and intertwined, with unilateralism and power politics on the rise. Referring to Venezuela, he noted that the sudden change in the situation has drawn widespread attention from the international community.

“We never believe that any country can play the role of world policeman, nor do we agree that any country can claim itself to be an international judge,” Wang said, stressing that the sovereignty and security of all countries must be fully protected under international law.

In a separate response to media queries on Saturday, China’s Foreign Ministry expressed serious concern over reports that the United States forcibly detained Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro and his wife and removed them from the country. The spokesperson said the US actions constitute a grave violation of international law, the basic norms governing international relations, and the purposes and principles of the UN Charter.

China called on Washington to ensure the personal safety of President Maduro and his wife, immediately release them, halt efforts to subvert Venezuela’s political system, and resolve the issue through dialogue and negotiation.

Pakistan’s position

Pakistan also expressed concern over the evolving situation in Venezuela. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs said Pakistan attaches great importance to the well-being of the Venezuelan people and urged restraint and de-escalation, emphasizing adherence to the UN Charter and international law to resolve the crisis. Islamabad added that it is closely monitoring developments and remains engaged in ensuring the safety and security of the Pakistani community in Venezuela.
