China adds 20 Japanese entities to export control list, citing national security

By The South Asia Times

BEIJING - China has placed 20 Japanese entities, including the National Institute for Defense Studies, on its export control list, prohibiting the export of dual-use goods to the organizations, according to the Ministry of Commerce.

The decision, announced on Monday, was taken to safeguard China's national security and interests and to fulfill international obligations, including those related to non-proliferation, the ministry said.

According to China's state-run Global Times, the new restrictions bar Chinese exporters from supplying dual-use items—products and technologies that can have both civilian and military applications—to the listed entities.

The ministry also said overseas organizations and individuals are prohibited from transferring or providing dual-use items originating from China to the 20 designated Japanese entities. Any ongoing transactions involving such exports must be terminated immediately.

The National Institute for Defense Studies, a Tokyo-based research institution affiliated with Japan's Ministry of Defense, is among the organizations included on the list.

China's Ministry of Commerce did not immediately provide further details on why the specific entities were designated or identify the remaining organizations on the list.

The move comes amid continued tensions between China and Japan over regional security issues, including disputes in the East China Sea, defense cooperation between Japan and its allies, and restrictions on advanced technology exports.

Japanese authorities had not immediately commented on China's latest export control measures.
