China tells Israel, Beijing opposes any military strikes launched by Israel and US against Iran

By The South Asia Times

BEIJING - China’s top diplomat has publicly rejected the recent US and Israeli military strikes on Iran, urging an immediate end to hostilities and a return to diplomatic talks to calm the rapidly escalating conflict in the Middle East.

Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi, who is also a senior member of the ruling Communist Party’s Political Bureau, made the stance clear during a phone call with Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Sa'ar at the latter’s request, according to a Chinese Foreign Ministry statement.

Wang stressed that China “opposes the military strikes launched by Israel and the United States against Iran,” saying that force cannot solve complex geopolitical disputes and may lead to serious long-term consequences.

China’s position reflects its long-standing call for resolving international crises through dialogue and adherence to the principles of the United Nations Charter.

Wang noted that recent diplomatic progress between Tehran and Washington had created an opportunity to address security concerns, including those of Israel, but that progress was disrupted by military action.

He said China remains committed to playing a constructive role in promoting de-escalation and preventing the conflict from spiraling out of control.

During the call, Wang also urged Israel to ensure the safety of Chinese citizens and institutions in the region, a request Israel’s foreign minister said his country takes seriously and will honor.

Beijing’s public opposition to the strikes comes against the backdrop of one of the most volatile periods in recent Middle East history.

The intensified confrontation began after joint US-Israeli air operations targeted Iranian military sites, assassinated several top Iranian officials, including the country’s Supreme Leader.

Tehran has since responded with widespread missile and drone attacks against US military assets and Israeli positions, raising fears of a broader regional war.
