Death toll rises to 14 in deadly train crash in Indonesia

By The South Asia Times

JAKARTA – The death toll from Monday evening’s catastrophic train collision at East Bekasi Station has climbed to 14, with 84 others injured, state-run news agency ANTARA reports.

PT Kereta Api Indonesia (KAI) confirmed the updated figures at 08.45 WIB on Tuesday. The incident began when a Commuter Line train collided with a taxi. In a shocking secondary impact, a distant train later arrived on the same tracks and struck the commuter train.

“We extend our deepest condolences to the families of the deceased,” said KAI President Director Bobby Rasyidin. All victims have been evacuated, with the deceased sent to Kramat Jati Police Hospital for identification.

The injured are receiving treatment across multiple hospitals, including Bekasi Regional Hospital and Siloam Hospital. KAI has confirmed all medical and funeral expenses will be fully covered by insurance.

Evacuation efforts remain underway, with Basarnas (search and rescue) and medical teams carefully extracting victims requiring special treatment. East Bekasi Station remains closed to passengers, while an emergency post and information hotline (121) have been set up for families seeking news of loved ones.
