Pakistan warns of global economic fallout from Strait of Hormuz closure at UN Security Council

By The South Asia Times

UNITED NATIONS - Pakistan has warned that the ongoing closure of the Strait of Hormuz is testing global governance and strategic stability, with developing countries facing the most severe economic consequences.

Speaking at a high-level UN Security Council open debate on maritime waterway safety on Monday, Pakistan’s Permanent Representative Ambassador Asim Iftikhar Ahmad said the crisis has brought home a stark reality: “Resilience of global governance architecture and strategic stability are now being tested by the safety and openness of maritime waterways.”

Ambassador Ahmad noted that any disruption to sea traffic gravely impacts international trade. “Closure of the Strait of Hormuz and its cascading effects on food and energy security, and supply-chain disruption is a case in point,” he said.

He outlined that initial impacts on oil, gas, and fertilizer procurement and pricing would increasingly trigger second and third-order effects on inflation, growth, current accounts, and balance of payments -- with developing countries hit hardest.

As a littoral state of the Indian Ocean Region with proximity to global maritime chokepoints, Pakistan is directly impacted, he said. Backed by China, Saudi Arabia, Türkiye, and Egypt, Pakistan has spearheaded diplomatic efforts for de-escalation between the United States and Iran.

“Pakistan remains firm in its faith in diplomacy and dialogue,” the ambassador stressed, pledging continued facilitation toward an enduring resolution.

He also highlighted Pakistan’s leadership of Combined Task Force 150 and CTF-151, as well as its Regional Maritime Security Patrols, reaffirming commitment to a rules-based maritime order anchored in UNCLOS.
