Iranian Foreign Minister meets PM Shehbaz Sharif as US-Iran peace talks enter crucial stage

By The South Asia Times

ISLAMABAD - Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi met with Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif at the Prime Minister’s House on Saturday, as high-stakes negotiations between Tehran and Washington move into a critical phase in Islamabad.

Araghchi met Sharif at Prime Minister office as the meeting also attended Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Senator Mohammad Ishaq Dar, as well as Chief of Army Staff and Chief of Defence Forces Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir.

During the meeting, the regional situation was discussed in detail, according to official sources.

Prior to the meeting with the prime minister, Araghchi held talks with Field Marshal Asim Munir in Islamabad. The army chief’s presence at the subsequent meeting with the prime minister underscores the close coordination between Pakistan’s civilian and military leadership in the mediation effort.

The Iranian foreign minister’s meetings come as a US delegation, led by special envoy Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, is expected to arrive in Islamabad later Saturday morning for a second round of peace talks. The White House confirmed the delegation’s travel plans on Friday.

Prime Minister Sharif has personally been involved in brokering the ongoing ceasefire between the US and Iran, which has been extended following earlier rounds of talks in Islamabad. The prime minister has described the arrival of the Iranian delegation as a major diplomatic breakthrough.

Deputy Prime Minister Dar earlier on Saturday warned media outlets against speculative reporting, stating that only official sources reflect Pakistan’s position on the facilitation process. He reiterated that Pakistan remains committed to achieving peace and stability in the region and beyond.

The outcome of the Araghchi-PM Sharif meeting is expected to set the stage for the upcoming US-Iran negotiations in the Pakistani capital.
