First Muslim female minister in UK fired because of her faith, begins new debate in country

LONDON (TSAT) - The first UK’s woman Muslim minister Nusrat Ghani claimed to had fired from portfolio in 2020 because of her faith as she was Muslim, started new debate on social media.

 

The Sunday Times, reported that Ghani , 49, says she was fired from her position because of her religion as she is Muslim.

 

“She claimed she was told by Mark Spencer that her “Muslimness was raised as an issue” at a meeting in Downing Street and that her “Muslim woman minister status was making colleagues feel uncomfortable”, the Sunday Times quoted Ghani as saying.

 

Ghani was fired during the 2020 as a transport minister in a reshuffling by Boris Johnson’ government.

 

However, the than time Johnson’s whip Mark Spencer strongly reacted over the allegations and called it “false”.

 

“To ensure other Whips are not drawn into this matter, I am identifying myself as the person Nusrat Ghani MP has made claims about this evening. These accusations are completely false and I consider them to be defamatory. I have never used those words attributed to me,” Mark Spencer tweeted.

 

However, the civil society and media persons calling for investigation as the act most of social media users termed as “Islamophobic”.

 

“That Nus could be treated like this is completely intolerable. I value  @Nus_Ghani as a great colleague and I'm appalled. We must get to the bottom of it,” Steve Baker MP wrote on Twitter.

 

A British journalists Kevin Maguire termed the news “truly shocking, totally horrific and absolutely indefensible.”

 

Another journalists Gabriel Pogrund  wrote on Twitter that “Mark Spencer, the chief whip, publicly identifies himself as the individual who allegedly told Nusrat Ghani she was sacked as a minister for being Muslim.”

 

“Moments later, he deleted the Tweets,” he added.

 

CEO of CEO Index Censorship Ruth Smeeth expressed her solidarity with Ghani and said women in politics bullying.

 

“All too often women in politics have been bullied to choose between their party and their faith and identity. It has to stop. Sending love and solidarity to @Nus_Ghani,” Smeeth said.

 

Allegations of Islamophobia within Britain’s leading Conservative Party reached a new high in 2019 after 25 in-office and former party councilors were identified as having posted anti-Muslim and racist remarks on social media, according to Anadolu News Agency.

 

Last year a ITV News reported that Muslim MPs in the Labour also believed that party does not take Islamophobia seriously and they lost confidence over their party.

 

Turkish, Pakistani and  other Muslim countries leaders repeatedly called on western leaders to take practical actions is Islamophobia growing in their countries because of statements of some western political leaders.
