By Mashal Khan

ISLAMABAD: A Pakistani court on Wednesday acquitted the country's prime minister Shehbaz Sharif and his son Hamza Shehbaz in a major money laundering case.

Sharif who was expected to indicted in the said case before taking office of the premier in April this year, now get relief in Rs 16 billion money laundering case.

The court announced its verdict after Federal Investigation Agency told the court that no direct transaction had been made in the bank accounts of PM Shehbaz and his son from benami (unnamed) accounts, according to Dawn.

The said agency was filed the case against Sharif after a long investigation in 2020.

Sharif's another son Suleman had been declared a proclaimed offender by the court for his constant absence in the trial proceedings.

Reacted on the verdict the prime minister thanked God for victory in the “false, baseless, and political revenge-based case of money laundering”. “We stand vindicated in front of the court, law and nation today,” he tweeted.

Former PM Imran Khan called the acquittal of cases of Sharif's family as part of NRO 2.

"There was evidences of money loundering in Shehbaz Sharif case and he was going to jail in the said case but he became the prime minister and now get rid from the case," Khan said earlier today in Islamabad.

Earlier, vice president of the ruling party Maryam Nawaz was also acquitted in corruption case last month.
