Pakistan blocks India's attempts to become a permanent member of UN Security Council

NEW YORK: Pakistan successfully blocked India's attempt to secure the support of the majority of UN members and become a permanent member of the UN Security Council.

 

According to Indian media, New Delhi even failed to get the support of 65 votes out of 193 member states of the UN. 

 

While majority of members of the UNGA stood with Pakistan who opposed the New Delhi attempt and said that India is a country that violated the UNSC's several resolutions over Kashmir.

 

Pakistan ambassador to the UN Munir Akaram also briefed the UNGA over human rights violations committed by PM Modi-led government in India and the ongoing killing of Muslims and Sikhs in the South Asian country.

 

Akram told the UN that New Delhi is also involved in terrorism and supports terror groups in the region. 

 

Pakistan, Italy, and Canada which lead Uniting for Consensus (UfC) group also known as the Coffee Group in the UN, enjoy the support of over 130 member states while on another hand Brazil, Germany, India, and Japan are known as the G4 group have only support of these four countries. 

 

UfC opposing the attempt of G4 who wants to become permanent members of the UNSC. 

 

India lacks getting a two-third majority in the UN Charter, whereas, the Indian group also loses the backing of the United States (US),” according to Tribune India.

 

“India has also failed to meet the criteria for becoming a UNSC permanent member despite claiming to be a secular and strong economy,” Pakistan maintained.

 

India needed the support of 129 member states, however, New Delhi failed to even secure the support of half of the required countries, according to Indian daily. 

Pakistan diplomats called the Indian failure to get the support of even 65 countries a big diplomatic success for Islamabad as the majority of UN members stood with Pakistan.
