Kashmiri marks 32nd anniversary of “Gaw Kadal Massacre”, killing of 52 civilians by Indian forces

The South Asia Times report

SRINAGAR (TSAT) - Kashmiri in the Indian administered Kashmir, Pakistan and other countries around the world on Friday commemorated the 32nd anniversary of “Gawkadal Massacre”.

On Jan. 21 in 1990, Indian forces had brutally killed at least 52 innocent and peaceful protesters in Srinagar for demanding freedom from Indian oppression.

On Friday, Kashmiri people also observed shutdown in parts of Srinagar and other areas of the valley to condemned the barbaric and brutal murder of Kashmiri in 1990 on this day.

“#Kashmir On this day in 1990, paramilitary forces shot dead over 50 people and injured hundreds when they opened fire on a procession in Srinagar. 32 years down the line, case stands closed. Victims awaiting justice. Culprits roaming free,” a Kashmiri journalist Ishfaq Reshi tweeted.

“We will never forget our history.we will never forget dates. Remembrance is a part of our resistance. we remember 21-01-1990 when one of the most worst massacre in kashmir history happened!,” said Zuhaib Mir.

The Pakistan Foreign Minister spokesman Asim Iftikhar Ahmad also joined the Kashmiri people and said today Kashmiris in IIOJK [Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir] and around the world joined by Pakistanis and others are marking the grim anniversary of the “Gaw Kadal” massacre.

“Pakistan stands in solidarity with the victims of this unspeakable crime and reiterates the call for bringing the perpetrators to justice. It is appalling as it is condemnable that even after more than three decades, there is no accountability for this cold-blooded killing,” Ahmad told reporters during his weekly media briefing.

“This travesty of justice is basically a stark remainder of the culture of impunity and rule of NO law that is deeply entrenched and continues to fester in IIOJK – in which the oppressed are punished and persecuted while the perpetrators are encouraged and protected.”

He added that Kashmiri are facing the state-sponsored terrorism from over seven decades as the Indian forces committing human rights violations.

“Pakistan condemns the increasing harassment, illegal arrests and registration of fake criminal cases against journalists and civil society activists in IIOJK. The attack and ban on Kashmir Press Club manifestly reflects India’s entrenched use of brute force and coercion to forcibly silence all those raising voices against its horrendous crimes and genocidal acts in IIOJK,” he added.

He urged the United Nations and international human rights and humanitarian organizations to hold India accountable for its war crimes and crimes against humanity in Kashmir.
