German Naval Chief resigns after speaks against Ukraine, China in India

BERLIN (TSAT) - German Naval Chief Kay-Achim Schönbach has resigned after his remarks against Ukraine and China during his visit to India on Saturday.

 

During his official visit to the New Delhi, Kay-Achim Schönbach spoke in the Indian Defense Ministry funded think tank, Manohar Parrikar IDSA, where he praised Russian President Putin and said the Crimea Peninsula is now gone, now Ukraine would not get it back.

 

in 2014, Russian forces entered the Crimean Peninsula, which was part of Ukraine and later Russia divided it into two separate federal subjects of the Russian Federation.

 

“The Crimea Peninsula is gone: It will never come back — this is a fact,” DW quoted Naval chief as saying and added Putin need to respect.

 

While during his speech, he also criticised China aimed to show his country's support for New Delhi as India has borders and diplomatic tension with Beijing.

 

However, the Indian think tank posted his comments on social media that brought huge criticism against Kay-Achim Schönbach and Ukraine foreign ministry summoned German envoy to their country to convey their anger over his remarks.

 

“My security policy statements in a talk show at a think tank in India gave my personal opinion for that moment on the spot. They do not correspond in any way to the official position of the

@BMVg_Bundeswehr,” German Naval Chief tweeted.

“Carelessly, misjudged in the situation, I shouldn't have done it like that. There's nothing wrong with that, it was a clear mistake,” he added.

 

He was apparently not awaired that the Indian think tank would post his remarks on social media that would cause embarrassment for him.

 

Later he announced his resignation that immediately accepted by the country’s Defence Minister.
