China executes South Korean national on drug charges

By The South Asia Times

SEOUL - China on Friday executed a South Korean national in drug-related charges, South Korean foreign ministry claimed.

This is for the first time that Beijing executed any South Korean in last nine year.

South Korean foreign ministry official expressed regret over the execution, which was conducted in Guangzhou, Guangdong Province, despite Seoul's repeated calls for clemency, Yonhap News Agency quoted the unnamed official of the ministry as saying.

The official also confirmed that Beijing was notified Seoul regarding the execution in advance through diplomatic channels.

The South Korean man was arrested in China in 2014 on charges of drug trafficking. Later, a Chinese court was sentenced to death in 2019 and the country’s higher court also upheld the lower court verdict in 2020.
