US shut down Afghanistan embassy in Washington, blocks its bank accounts

By Zahid Shah

The United States has reportedly decided to shut down the former Afghan government embassy in Washington and its consulates in Los Angeles and New York, according to report.

The developments came after recent meetings of the Afghan acting foreign minister Amir Khan Muttaqi and other officials with US diplomats and representatives in Doha and Norway.

The US government informed the Afghan embassy and consulates in their country regarding its decision and also stripped their diplomatic immunity, Al Arabiya reported.

Earlier, the US state-run Voice of America also reported that Washington has frozen the bank accounts of the embassy and Afghan consulates in the country.

Following took over Kabul by Afghan Taliban in mid-August last year, the new government announced its spokesman Suhail Shaheen will represent them in the United Nations and also appointed diplomats in Pakistan and Qatar as well.

However, the United Nations last month allowed the former Ashraf Ghani’s government envoy to continue sitting on his seat in the UN.

The Taliban government called the UN committee decision against the international laws and norms and urged the world body to allow their envoy to take Afghanistan seat in the UN as now Taliban are the legitimate rulers of Afghanistan.

So far, no country has officially recognised the new Taliban government in Kabul, however over 15 countries envoys and embassies are working in Kabul and also hold meetings with new government officials.
