Pakistan security forces kill four militants in counterterrorism operations in northwest

ISLAMABAD — Pakistan's military said that security forces killed four suspected militants in two intelligence-based operations conducted overnight in the country's northwestern Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province.

According to a statement issued by the military's media wing, the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR), the operations were carried out in Dera Ismail Khan and Mohmand districts following reports about the presence of militants.

In the first operation in Dera Ismail Khan, security forces engaged suspected militants after locating their hideout. Following what the military described as an intense exchange of fire, two militants were killed.

A separate intelligence-led operation in Mohmand district resulted in the deaths of two additional militants after security forces engaged them in what the ISPR called a "skillful engagement."

The military referred to the slain militants as members of "Fitna-al-Khwarij," a term Pakistani authorities use for militants linked to the outlawed Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP). The ISPR also alleged that the group was "Indian-sponsored," an accusation that New Delhi has consistently rejected.

Weapons and ammunition were recovered from the dead militants, who, according to the military, had been involved in multiple terrorist activities in the region.

The ISPR said clearance operations were continuing in the affected areas to ensure that no other militants remained in hiding.

Pakistan has intensified counterterrorism operations under its national security initiative "Azm-e-Istehkam," aimed at dismantling militant networks and improving internal security. The military reiterated its commitment to continuing operations alongside law enforcement agencies to eliminate what it described as foreign-sponsored terrorism.

Attacks by militant groups have increased in Pakistan's northwestern Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and southwestern Balochistan provinces in recent years. The TTP has been blamed for many attacks targeting security forces and civilians. Pakistan has repeatedly accused the Afghan Taliban administration of allowing TTP militants to operate from sanctuaries inside Afghanistan, a claim Kabul denies. Violence has risen since the Taliban returned to power in Afghanistan in 2021.
