South Korean Police Begin Investigation into President Yoon Over Treason Allegations

By The South Asia Times

SEOUL - South Korean authorities have launched an official investigation into President Yoon Suk-yeol following allegations of treason related to his recent attempt to impose a brief period of martial law.

The move comes after widespread public and political backlash, with opposition lawmakers accusing the president of undermining the country’s democratic framework.

The controversy stems from President Yoon’s abrupt declaration of martial law, citing national security concerns. The order, which granted extensive powers to the military, was revoked by the National Assembly within hours amid claims that the president acted unconstitutionally and without sufficient justification.

Opposition leaders and legal experts have since labeled the action as a "breach of constitutional authority" and an "attempt to subvert democratic governance." The Democratic Party and several civic groups filed formal complaints, accusing the president of treason for allegedly seeking to concentrate power in the executive branch.

“Treason is the most serious charge, but the president’s actions have left us no choice. This is about protecting the constitutional order,” said opposition leader Lee Jae-myung.

Police Investigation Underway

The National Police Agency confirmed that it had received multiple complaints and launched a preliminary investigation to determine whether President Yoon’s actions violated South Korea’s constitution and national security laws.

The investigation will examine whether the martial law declaration was made with the intent to suppress dissent and consolidate power, rather than address genuine security threats. Investigators are also expected to scrutinize communications and orders between the president, his aides, and the military during the lead-up to the announcement.

"We will conduct this investigation impartially and thoroughly," a police spokesperson stated. "No one is above the law, and this includes the highest office in the land."

The announcement of the probe has deepened the political divide in the country. Opposition parties have welcomed the investigation, with some calling for President Yoon to step down to ensure an impartial process.

On the other hand, ruling party lawmakers have criticized the move as politically motivated. "This is a witch hunt designed to destabilize the government," said a senior member of Yoon’s People Power Party. "The president acted in the nation’s best interest, and we are confident the investigation will prove his innocence."

Public opinion remains polarized. Large-scale protests have erupted in major cities, with demonstrators calling for accountability and constitutional safeguards to prevent similar incidents in the future. At the same time, smaller counter-protests have voiced support for Yoon, arguing that his actions were misinterpreted and necessary for national security.
