Russia declares Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp as extremist organization, ban its operation

MOSCOW (TSAT) - Russian authorities banned social media giant Facebook, WhatsApp, and Instagram and declared them as “extremist” organizations in its country.

According to TASS news agency, the move came after the Russian Prosecutor General’s Office asked the government to declare Meta, which includes Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp, an extremist organization, and ban it in Russia.

Russia accused the social media platforms of spreading hatred against Russian including its armed forces.

On Saturday, Instagram head Adam Mosseri also confirmed the Russian government move and said his organization operation will halt from March 14.

On Monday, Instagram will be blocked in Russia.  This decision will cut 80 million in Russia off from one another, and from the rest of the world as ~80% of people in Russia follow an Instagram account outside their country,” he wrote on Twitter and called the Moscow decision “is wrong.”

Earlier, Meta president for global affairs, Nick Clegg admitted that his organization allowed Ukrainian to express their views openly.

“If we applied our standard content without any adjustment we would now be removing content from ordinary Ukrainian expressing their resisting and fury at the invading military forces which would rightly be viewed as unacceptable,” said Clegg
