Russian envoy says US shaping public opinion on anti-Russia moves at NATO summit

- Anatoly Antonov says Russia-NATO confrontation continues to move toward 'most unfavorable outcome'

MOSCOW (AA) - Russia's envoy to the US said Tuesday that Washington is shaping public opinion to favor anti-Russian decisions expected to be taken at the NATO summit in Vilnius, Lithuania.

In a statement on Telegram, Antonov warned that the Russia-NATO confrontation continues to move toward "the most unfavorable outcome."

"On the eve of the NATO summit, the atmosphere in the US information field became as heated as possible. Everything is being done to prepare the local public opinion for the approval of any anti-Russian decisions that will be taken in Vilnius in the coming days," he said.

Antonov said that steps the West is taking "create increasingly insurmountable obstacles" on the path of overcoming the crisis, "fraught with the most serious consequences for international security."

The ambassador accused the US of double standards regarding the situation in Ukraine, saying Washington had been ignoring the situation in Ukraine for many years, imposing sanctions on Russia amid alleged violations, and criticizing use of "non-human" ammunition and weapons.

"And now they themselves are throwing cluster munitions into the abyss of the Ukrainian crisis. At the same time, they do not justify themselves in any way, but only voice one thesis -- victory over the Russians is necessary," he said.

On July 7, US presidential advisor for national security Jake Sullivan announced that the US had decided to provide Ukraine with cluster munitions.

NATO's heads of state and government summit will take place at the Lithuanian capital Vilnius on July 11 and 12.
