Saudi Arabia announces arrival of Pakistani military forces under joint defense pact

RIYADH – The Saudi Ministry of Defense announced on Saturday the arrival of a Pakistani military force at King Abdulaziz Air Base in the Eastern Sector, under the terms of a Joint Strategic Defense Agreement signed between the two brotherly countries last year.

The Pakistani force consists of fighter and support aircraft belonging to the Pakistan Air Force, the ministry said in a statement.

"The aim is to enhance joint military coordination, raise the level of operational readiness between the armed forces of the two countries, and support security and stability at both regional and international levels," the statement read.

The deployment follows the signing of a landmark Joint Strategic Defense Agreement between Saudi Arabia and Pakistan in 2025. The pact marked a significant deepening of military ties between two of the Islamic world's most influential nations.

While the full text of the agreement has not been made public, officials at the time described it as a comprehensive framework for defense cooperation, including joint military exercises, intelligence sharing, and mutual logistical support.

The agreement reflected both countries' concerns over regional instability, particularly in the Gulf and the Middle East. Saudi Arabia has sought to diversify its security partnerships beyond traditional Western allies, while Pakistan has long maintained a strategic interest in the security of the Gulf, where millions of Pakistani expatriates work and reside.

The deployment of Pakistani fighter aircraft to King Abdulaziz Air Base in the Eastern Sector -- home to Saudi Arabia's critical oil infrastructure -- sends a clear message of military interoperability and mutual defense commitment.

The move also comes amid heightened regional tensions following the recent US-Iran war and ongoing ceasefire negotiations hosted by Pakistan in Islamabad. The presence of Pakistani forces in Saudi Arabia underscores Islamabad's balancing act: mediating between Tehran and Washington while maintaining deep strategic ties with Riyadh.

Analysts view the deployment as a tangible manifestation of the defense pact, transforming what a written agreement was into operational reality.
