Pakistan sails Iran’s Hormuz gesture to allow 20 oil tankers, urges US–Iran dialogue amid rising tensions”

By The South Asia Times

ISLAMABAD - Pakistan’s Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar on Sunday welcomed Iran’s decision to allow additional Pakistani-flagged vessels to transit through the Strait of Hormuz, calling it a “constructive gesture” that could contribute to regional stability.

In a post shared on X, Dar said the government of Iran has agreed to permit 20 more ships under the Pakistani flag to pass through the strategic waterway, with two vessels crossing daily. He described the move as a “harbinger of peace” and a confidence-building step amid heightened regional tensions.

“This positive announcement marks a meaningful step toward peace and will strengthen our collective efforts,” Dar wrote, emphasizing that dialogue and diplomacy remain the only viable path forward.

Significantly, the Pakistani foreign minister tagged senior international figures in his post, including US Vice President JD Vance, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, and US envoy Steve Witkoff, underscoring Islamabad’s push for broader engagement between Washington and Tehran.

The announcement comes at a sensitive moment as regional powers intensify diplomatic efforts to prevent further escalation in the Middle East, where tensions have disrupted maritime trade and global energy flows.

Pakistan has positioned itself as a facilitator of dialogue, urging restraint and renewed negotiations to avoid further instability in critical shipping lanes such as Hormuz, through which a significant share of the world’s oil supply passes.
