Pakistan voices concern over rising regional tensions, urges restraint under Islamabad MoU

By The South Asia Times

ISLAMABAD — Pakistan on Sunday expressed deep concern over the latest escalation of regional tensions, calling on all parties to exercise restraint, avoid further escalation, and honor their commitments under the Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed in June.

In a statement, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said Pakistan strongly supports the sovereignty and territorial integrity of all "brotherly countries" in the region and urged immediate steps toward de-escalation through dialogue and diplomacy.

"Pakistan remains committed to providing all support towards achieving lasting peace and stability in the region through dialogue and diplomacy," the Foreign Ministry said.

Earlier in the day, Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Senator Mohammad Ishaq Dar held a telephone conversation with Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi to discuss the evolving regional situation.

During the call, Dar stressed the importance of all parties adhering to the path of de-escalation and restraint, in line with commitments made under the Islamabad MoU. He emphasized that dialogue and diplomacy remain the only viable means of resolving disputes and ensuring lasting regional peace and stability.

Dar also reaffirmed Pakistan's readiness to continue playing a constructive role in promoting regional peace, while both foreign ministers agreed to remain in close contact as developments unfold.

The Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding was reached in June following intensive diplomatic efforts aimed at easing regional tensions.

The agreement committed the parties to pursue dialogue, avoid military escalation, and establish mechanisms to address disputes through diplomatic channels. Pakistan has since repeatedly emphasized the importance of implementing the accord and has offered to facilitate efforts aimed at preserving regional stability.
