2 army troops, as many suspected militants killed in NW Pakistan

South Asian nuclear country has recorded nearly 300 deaths in terrorist attacks over past year

 

PAKISTAN (AA) - Two Pakistan Army troops and as many suspected militants were killed in a clash in northwest Pakistan on Wednesday, raising the total number of fatalities in terrorism-related incidents to nearly 300 over the past year.

The clash – the latest in a string of similar incidents – occurred during a security operation in the restive Tirah valley of the Khyber tribal district, which sits on the Pakistan-Afghanistan border, the military said in a statement.

Another four suspected militants were injured in the clash.

“Security forces of Pakistan are determined to eliminate the menace of terrorism and such sacrifices of our brave soldiers further strengthen our resolve,” it further said.

The South Asian nuclear country has seen an uptick in terrorist attacks over the past several months.

Over the past year, at least 297 people were martyred and 521 got injured in 436 terrorist incidents, according to the army.

Some 157 suspected militants were killed, and nearly 1,400 were arrested during more than 8,000 intelligence-based operations during the previous year.
