North Korea Approves Landmark Defense Pact with Russia

Agreement Mandates Mutual Military Assistance Against Third-Party Aggression

By Islamudin

ANKARA (AA) - North Korea has officially ratified a sweeping defense pact with Russia, committing both nations to provide immediate military support in the event of an attack by a third country, state media announced on Tuesday.

The Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) reported that North Korean leader Kim Jong Un signed the decree on Monday, solidifying the agreement signed earlier this year.

Details of the Pact

"The ‘Treaty on Comprehensive Strategic Partnership between the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea and the Russian Federation,’ signed in Pyongyang on June 19, 2024, was ratified as a decree of the President of the State Affairs of the DPRK," stated the KCNA.

The treaty is set to take effect once the two countries exchange ratification instruments, further strengthening their military and strategic collaboration.

Russia's Approval

This move follows Russian President Vladimir Putin's approval of the treaty, which he signed into law on Saturday. The agreement underscores a shared commitment to military cooperation and mutual defense, particularly in response to perceived threats from external powers.

Broader Implications

Beyond military aid, the treaty emphasizes fostering a comprehensive partnership based on mutual respect for sovereignty, territorial integrity, equality, and non-interference in domestic affairs.

However, this growing alliance has drawn criticism from Western nations. The U.S., South Korea, and Ukraine allege that North Korea has deployed troops to Russia to aid in the Ukraine war. Pyongyang has yet to confirm these accusations, though similar claims include Seoul's assertion that North Korea shipped millions of artillery shells to Moscow.

Strategic Significance

The ratification marks a significant milestone in North Korea-Russia relations, aligning both nations against mounting international pressure. The strengthened partnership signals a deepening divide between these countries and the Western-aligned bloc, heightening global geopolitical tensions.
