NATO members split over ban on Russian oil, gas, Hungary refused to join US decision

BUDAPEST, Hungary (TSAT) - After Germany's reservation over banning Russia's oil and gas, Hungary's government on Wednesday refused to join hands with the US and ban the import of oil and gas from Moscow.

In a video message, Hungary’s Prime Minister Viktor Orban said that his country needs Russian gas and oil and he will not impose sanctions on Russian products, according to Hungary Today.

“The efforts focus on creating peace, “however, we have to put at least as much energy into [reviewing] the economic consequences,” said the Hungary premier.

The sanctions imposed on Russia already have grave consequences, which can turn dire if they are expanded to include the imports of Russian oil and gas, he added.

On Tuesday, US President Joe Biden announced to ban Russia oil and gas and said he had taken the decision following consultation with his NATO Allies.

Europe largely depends on Russian gas and oil and banning its import could cause a huge energy crisis in the region.
