Iran signals openness to ‘fair’ talks with US amid rising regional tensions

By The South Asia Times

TEHRAN - Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian has directed the country’s foreign minister to explore negotiations that are “fair and balanced,” stressing they must be guided by dignity, caution, and national priorities.

In a message posted on social media Tuesday, Pezeshkian said the move follows appeals from friendly regional governments encouraging Tehran to consider a proposal by US President Donald Trump for renewed dialogue. He underscored that any potential talks must occur in an appropriate atmosphere, warning against threats and excessive demands, and insisted discussions should remain aligned with Iran’s national interests.

Speculation about diplomatic engagement intensified after Iranian media reported that the president had authorized the revival of nuclear negotiations with Washington, which have remained stalled since the 12-day conflict with Israel in June 2025.

The reports suggested that discussions could resume soon, possibly involving Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi and US Middle East envoy Steve Witkoff, according to Anadolu.

However, later updates described the claims of an immediate restart as unverified. Some outlets have since indicated that a possible meeting between Araghchi and Witkoff could take place in Istanbul on Friday, though no official confirmation has been issued.

The latest signals come amid increased regional diplomatic efforts, with countries such as Turkey reportedly seeking to reduce friction between Tehran and Washington. Meanwhile, tensions have been further heightened following President Trump’s announcement that a US naval fleet is being deployed toward the region.
