Pakistan court grants bail to former premier Imran Khan in Corruption Case

By The South Asia Times

ISLAMABAD -  Islamabad high court on Wednesday granted bail to former Prime Minister Imran Khan in another high-profile corruption case and ordered his release.

The verdict announced by Justice Main Gul Hasan Aurengzeb and accepted Khan's plea for granting his bail in ToshaKhana two case.

The case involves allegations against Khan and his wife, Bushra Bibi, for the illegal purchase and sale of foreign gifts received during his tenure as premier. Both have denied the accusations.

Bushra Bibi had already secured bail in the case, leaving the focus on Khan's legal battle.

Despite the court’s release order, it remains uncertain whether the former prime minister will walk free, as he is facing dozens of cases across Pakistan

These cases could potentially lead to his continued detention, even if he secures bail in individual matters.

Imran Khan, who was ousted from office in April 2022 through a parliamentary no-confidence vote, has since been entangled in a series of legal challenges. His arrest in August 2023 triggered nationwide protests and intensified political divisions in the country.

Khan’s legal troubles come amid ongoing political instability in Pakistan, with his Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party accusing the government of using legal cases to stifle political opposition. The government, however, maintains that the cases are legitimate and part of efforts to combat corruption and uphold the rule of law.

As the court’s decision is implemented, all eyes will be on how the authorities navigate the complex legal landscape surrounding one of Pakistan’s most prominent political figures.
