France rejects joining US-led mission in Strait of Hormuz

By The South Asia Times

PARIS - France has ruled out participation in a US-led maritime operation in the Strait of Hormuz, opting instead to pursue its own “strictly defensive” international mission to safeguard shipping lanes.

French Foreign Minister Jean-Noel Barrot said Paris would not take part in the American initiative, suggesting it risks linking naval operations with broader military actions in the region, according to Anadolu Agency.

“We would not take part in it,” he said, emphasizing that France remains focused on its independent plan.

The proposed French-led mission, backed by President Emmanuel Macron, is designed to protect maritime traffic through escort and mine-clearing operations once conditions allow. Officials say the effort will be coordinated with regional partners and strictly limited to defensive objectives.

Tensions around the waterway have intensified following recent conflict involving Iran and its adversaries, raising concerns over global energy supplies. The disruption has contributed to rising fuel prices and economic uncertainty worldwide.

France has already deployed naval assets to the region to protect its nationals and allies, while calling for the immediate reopening of the strait in line with international law. Paris maintains that its mission is not in competition with other proposals but is focused on ensuring stability and the swift resumption of commercial shipping.
