Pakistan Army Chief meets Iranian President, reaffirms commitment to regional peace

By The South Asia Times

ISLAMABAD — Pakistan's military chief, Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir, on Tuesday met Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian during the Iranian leader's state visit to Pakistan, with both sides discussing regional developments, peace initiatives and ways to strengthen bilateral cooperation, according to Pakistan's military.

The meeting comes at a time when Pakistan has emerged as a key diplomatic player in regional de-escalation efforts, following its role in facilitating dialogue between the United States and Iran that culminated in the recently signed Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding.

According to a statement issued by the military's media wing, the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR), Field Marshal Munir, who serves as both Chief of Army Staff and Chief of Defence Forces, exchanged views with President Pezeshkian on regional security developments and ongoing peace initiatives.

President Pezeshkian praised Pakistan's "constructive and responsible role" in promoting dialogue, de-escalation and regional stability amid growing geopolitical tensions. The Iranian leader acknowledged Islamabad's consistent efforts to encourage peaceful resolution of disputes and foster greater understanding among regional stakeholders.

Pakistan has recently gained international attention for mediating talks between Washington and Tehran that resulted in the Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding, a landmark agreement aimed at reducing tensions and establishing a framework for continued engagement between the longtime adversaries. Field Marshal Munir played a significant role in supporting Pakistan's diplomatic outreach and facilitating contacts that helped create conditions for the breakthrough.

During the meeting, Munir reiterated Pakistan's commitment to promoting peace and stability across the region, emphasizing that dialogue remains the most effective path toward resolving disputes and preventing escalation.

The two sides also reviewed the broader state of Pakistan-Iran relations and discussed avenues for expanding cooperation in areas of mutual interest. Both leaders reaffirmed their commitment to maintaining close consultations and strengthening bilateral ties.

Pakistan and Iran share a nearly 900-kilometre border and cooperate on a range of issues including border security, trade, energy and regional stability. The two countries have also sought to coordinate efforts to address security challenges along their frontier and promote economic connectivity.

President Pezeshkian's visit to Pakistan comes amid renewed diplomatic momentum in the region and follows a series of high-level engagements between Islamabad and Tehran. Analysts say the visit reflects the growing importance both countries attach to regional diplomacy at a time of shifting geopolitical dynamics in the Middle East and South Asia.

The ISPR statement said both sides shared the objective of advancing peace, prosperity and stability across the region and agreed to continue close coordination on matters of mutual concern.
