9 killed in Canada school shooting as gunman found dead, Police say

By The South Asia Times

TUMBLER RIDGE, British Columbia -  At least nine people were killed in a shooting incident that began at a secondary school in western Canada, prompting a major police response and emergency alerts, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) said Tuesday.

Authorities received reports of an active shooter at Tumbler Ridge Secondary School at around 1:20 p.m., triggering a public emergency alert as officers rushed to the scene. During their search, police discovered multiple victims inside the school and found the suspected gunman dead from what appears to be a self-inflicted injury.

Six victims were pronounced dead inside the school, while two others were airlifted to hospital with life-threatening injuries. A third victim died while being transported for medical care. Police later located two additional victims deceased at a residence believed to be connected to the attack, bringing the total number of victims to nine, excluding the suspect.

Approximately 25 others were treated for non-life-threatening injuries at a local medical center. All remaining students and staff were safely evacuated, and authorities are working with the school district to reunite families.

The emergency alert was lifted at 5:45 p.m. after police determined there was no ongoing threat and no outstanding suspects. However, investigators continue to search nearby homes and properties to establish whether anyone else was involved or injured.

The British Columbia RCMP Major Crime unit has taken over the investigation and is working to determine the motive and full circumstances surrounding the tragedy.

“This was a rapidly evolving and dynamic situation, and the swift cooperation from the school, first responders, and the community played a critical role in our response,” said Superintendent Ken Floyd, North District Commander. “Our thoughts are with the families, loved ones, and all those impacted by this tragic incident.”

Additional police resources, including frontline officers, emergency response teams, and victim services, remain deployed in the community as authorities continue their investigation into one of the region’s deadliest acts of violence in recent years.
