PESHAWAR - Pakistan’s military said security forces killed 12 militants after foiling a suicide assault on a joint security check post in the northwestern district of Bajaur, in an attack that left 11 soldiers and one child dead.

In a statement issued Tuesday, the military’s media wing, Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR), said the attack took place last night  when militants attempted to storm a joint check post operated by security forces and law enforcement agencies.

According to the statement, troops responded swiftly, preventing the attackers from breaching the facility and killing 12 militants during an exchange of fire. The military described the assailants as belonging to “Fitna al Khwarij,” which it alleged was backed by India.

The ISPR said that in a final attempt, the attackers rammed an explosives-laden vehicle into the perimeter wall of the check post. The powerful blast caused part of the structure to collapse, martyred 11 security personnel.

The explosion also damaged nearby homes, resulting in the death of a young girl and injuries to seven other civilians, including women and children.

A clearance operation remains underway in the area to ensure no additional militants are present, the statement added, saying counterterrorism operations will continue under the military’s ongoing campaign aimed at eliminating militancy nationwide.

The violence in Bajaur comes amid a surge in militant attacks across Pakistan.

On Monday, at least three police officers were killed during a security operation in Shangla, also in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province. In a separate overnight operation in Karachi, four militants were killed and two police officers injured, officials said.

Meanwhile, two civilians were killed and 20 others wounded in an improvised explosive device (IED) blast in Bannu on Monday, underscoring the persistent security challenges facing the country.

Pakistan has witnessed a renewed wave of militant violence in its western regions bordering Afghanistan, with security forces intensifying operations in response.
