China Says BRICS Aims to Cooperate Rather Than Target Third Countries

By The South Asia Times

Beijing, China — In a response to former President Donald Trump’s recent threat to impose a 100% tariff on BRICS nations if they replace dollars in bilateral trade , China on Tuesday said BRICS aim to cooperate rather than target third country.

At a press briefing in Beijing, Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Lin Jian said that BRICS, as an important platform for emerging markets and developing countries to cooperate, advocates openness and inclusiveness, win-win cooperation, non-confrontation and not targeting any third party.

"The group aims at mutual development and common prosperity, Lin said. #China is willing to work with BRICS partners to deepen pragmatic cooperation in various industries and make more contributions for sustained global economic growth," Lin said.

On Sunday, Trump had threatened to BRICS nations to impose 100% tariff if they tried to replace dollars.

"The idea that the BRICS Countries are trying to move away from the Dollar while we stand by and watch is OVER. We require a commitment from these Countries that they will neither create a new BRICS Currency, nor back any other Currency to replace the mighty U.S. Dollar or, they will face 100% Tariffs, and should expect to say goodbye to selling into the wonderful U.S. Economy. They can go find another “sucker!” There is no chance that the BRICS will replace the U.S. Dollar in International Trade, and any Country that tries should wave goodbye to America,' Trump said on X.

Trump’s recent tariff threat is seen as part of his ongoing strategy to bolster his reputation as a staunch advocate for U.S. economic interests. During his presidency, Trump imposed tariffs on hundreds of billions of dollars worth of Chinese goods, sparking a trade war between the two countries that had significant ripple effects across global markets. Although the Biden administration has pursued a less combative approach, Trump’s statements indicate his intent to maintain pressure on Beijing.

The global economic situation remains fluid as the BRICS nations continue to build their multilateral alliances, and Trump’s tariff threat adds another layer of complexity to an already volatile geopolitical landscape. For now, BRICS appears to be focused on cooperation among its members, seeking to strengthen its position as a voice for the global south, while the U.S. and China remain locked in a contest of influence that could shape the world economy for decades to come.
