Tensions Escalate as Bangladesh Halts Indian Border Road Construction — Regional Strains Deepen

By The South Asia Times

KURIGRAM, Bangladesh Tensions have flared along the Bangladesh–India border after the Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) intervened to stop the Indian Border Security Force (BSF) from constructing a paved road near the Khalishakothal area of Phulbari upazila in Kurigram.

The incidents occurred earlier this month, when BSF personnel had been working on the road close to the international boundary, prompting BGB to intensify patrols and force the Indian side to halt construction.

The BSF gradually withdrew materials following the intervention. A flag meeting was held on Thursday near International Main Pillar 934 between senior BGB and BSF commanders to address the situation and prevent further escalation.

According to BGB officials, the contentious stretch of road extended roughly one kilometre within Indian territory, with some sections 50–120 yards from the Bangladesh border.

Locals reported that the BSF had been working on the route overnight for several days, triggering concerns from Bangladeshi border forces. The BGB confirmed that patrols remain active and additional flag talks may be scheduled to maintain calm.

The confrontation comes amid broader diplomatic strains between Dhaka and New Delhi, which have intensified since the ousting and self-exile of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in August 2024 following widespread protests in Bangladesh.

Hasina now resides in India, and accusations over her continued political activity from Indian soil have been cited by Bangladesh’s interim government as a source of friction, with officials alleging that it complicates bilateral ties at a sensitive political moment.

Recent developments have included the temporary suspension of visa services by Bangladesh at their mission in India, citing security concerns, a move that reflects deepening mistrust between the two neighbours.

India has also responded to diplomatic tensions by summoning the Bangladeshi envoy to express concern over the security environment in Bangladesh, highlighting growing unease over border issues and political rhetoric spilling across diplomatic channels.

Analysts say the latest border incident underscores how tensions between the two countries have intensified due to India’s behaviour toward its neighbours and its continued support for Hasina despite Dhaka’s concerns.
