Universities in Afghanistan reopened, female students also joined their male colleagues after Taliban seized power

KABUL - After more than five months closure, the universities in some province in Afghanistan are formally reopened by the new Taliban government on Wednesday.

Last week, the country acting Education Minister Abdul Baqi Haqqani had announced that Taliban have decided to reopen the universities in warm provinces from Feb. 2 while in cold areas from Feb. 26.


“For the first time since the Taliban seized power in Afghanistan last August, some public universities have reopened and - in a long awaited development – female students have been allowed to join their male counterparts in the classroom,” Yalda Hakim, a journalists always spoke for women education in the country tweeted.

“ On the 26th of February, university students, including women, return in colder provinces,” he added.

The development also appreciated by young people in Afghanistan and abroad as now girls students could join the universities and continue their education.

“I am very happy that finally our universities reopened and now we will go back to the classes,” Waheed Ashrafi, a student in Kabul told TSAT.

Taliban spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid last month said that their government will reopen all the male and female schools from new academic year as currently in many areas the students on winter vacations and expected to come back from first week of March.
