Over 50 killed in floods in Afghanistan as heavy rains devastate multiple provinces

By The South Asia Times

KABUL - At least 51 people have been killed and 89 injured in widespread flooding across Afghanistan over the past eight days, as heavy rains continue to batter large parts of the country, officials said.

In the last 24 hours alone, three people were killed and 16 others injured as floods swept through at least 18 provinces, including Kabul, Kandahar and Herat, according to Amu News.

Authorities reported extensive damage, with 384 homes destroyed and around 700 more partially damaged in just one day. Floodwaters also wiped out nearly 1,500 acres of farmland, along with orchards and other agricultural assets, affecting more than 800 families.

Since the rains began on March 26, at least 676 homes have been destroyed, 367 kilometers of roads damaged and nearly 4,000 acres of land affected. Overall, more than 8,600 families have been impacted nationwide.

Afghanistan remains highly vulnerable to seasonal flooding, particularly in spring when heavy rainfall and snowmelt strain fragile infrastructure. Officials warn the latest disaster poses serious risks to rural communities heavily dependent on agriculture for their livelihoods.
