South Korea opposition wins presidential election

SEOUL (TSAT) - The South Korean main opposition party on Wednesday won the Presidential election and defeated the ruling party candidate with a narrow margin.

According to Yonhap News Agency, main opposition candidate Yoon Suk-yeol from the conservative People Power Party has secured 48.59% vote while his rival Lee Jae-myung from the ruling Democratic Party received 47.79% votes.

Lee, accepted his defeat and congratulation Yoon for victory. 

"I did my best but failed to live up to your expectations," he said. "All responsibility lies with me. I extend my congratulations to candidate Yoon Suk-yeol," Yonhap quoted Lee as saying in his statement read at the party headquarters.

Yoon Suk-yeol, 61, who is a law graduate, served as a prosecutor and investigated high-profile cases including former President Park Geun-hye’s corruption scandal that led to her impeachment and imprisonment.

Yoon was later promoted to the position of prosecutor-general in current president Moon's government, however in March last year, he resigned and announced to join politics and contest the election.

Yoon later succeeded to secure the nomination of the PPP.
