Pakistan marks 2nd death anniversary of veteran Kashmiri leader Syed Ali Geelani

ISLAMABAD - Pakistan on Friday observed the second death anniversary of the veteran Kashmiri leader Syed Ali Geelani and pay rich tribute to his life-long dedication for justice and freedom.

Caretaker Prime Minister Anwaar ul Haq Kakar while paying tribute to the top Kashmiri leader said Geelani commitment to the Kashmir Cause was unparalleled.

"My respects to iconic Kashmiri leader, Syed Ali Shah Geelani, on his second death anniversary. In the face of persecution and hardship, his commitment to the Kashmir Cause was unparalleled. I pay homage to his life-long struggle for freedom and justice," Kakar wrote on X, formerly known as Twitter.

Special prayers in the mosques were also held for Kashmiri leader across country while Pakistani Senators, Hurriyat Conference and Azad Jammu and Kashmir leader also gathered in a Seminar in Islamabad, organized by “Friends of Kashmir” and Kashmir Media Service, to pay tributes to top Kashmiri pro-freedom leader.

The Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Mumtaz Zahra Baloch said that Geelani was a true voice and face of the Kashmiris’ struggle for their rights and freedom.

"His unflinching commitment to the Kashmiris’ right to self-determination, in the face of persistent persecution and tremendous personal hardship, has inspired generations of Kashmiris in resisting the occupation and tyrann," she told reporters during her weekly press briefing.

"Syed Ali Geelani will be remembered for his matchless sacrifices and unconditional love for Kashmir and for Pakistan. Today, we pay rich tribute to his life-long dedication for justice and freedom and reaffirm our support to the people of Illegally Indian Occupied Jammu & Kashmir," Baloch said.

She urged the Indian government to give unhindered access to his family and followers to his final resting place.

Geelani died on Sept. 1st 2021 at the age of 91 at his home in Kashmir as he was suffering from many ailments and was detained in his house for the greater part of his life since 2010, when Indian-administered Kashmir witnessed a massive anti-India uprising.

The veteran Kashmiri leader started his political career as a member of Jamaat-e-Islami, and later joined the All Parties Hurriyat Conference -- an amalgam of over two dozen pro-freedom groups in Indian-administered Kashmir that seek self-determination.

Later, along with fellow Kashmiri pro-freedom leader Muhammad Ashraf Sehrai, Geelani launched the Tehreek-e-Hurriyat group.

In recognition of his lifelong struggle for Kashmiris, Pakistan on its 74th Independence Day awarded him the Nishan-e-Pakistan -- the country's highest civilian honor.
