Pakistan hints to procure oil, wheat from Russia

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan on Friday said Islamabad is considering to procure oil and wheat from Russia as the South Asian nation currently facing an economic and energy crisis.

 

During his weekly briefing, the Foreign Ministry spokesman, Asim Iftikhar said that Islamabad has been in contact with the Russian side, both through their embassy in Moscow and through the Russian Embassy in Islamabad for the possibility of oil import on discounted rates. 

 

 

“There is a separate discussion going on about procurement of wheat on G2G basis. On the oil, let me also recall, as you're aware that the Minister of State for Petroleum recently held a dedicated press briefing on these matters. And I can tell you that this subject matter remains under consideration,” he said.

 

Responding to a question regarding western countries’ sanctions on Russia, he said both sectors that is the food grain and the oil sector are not under sanctions.

 

“I can say that we have been And once again, I would say that we would take steps that are in our national interest - that serve our national interest,” he added.

 

His statement came after the Russian envoy in Pakistan on Thursday said that Moscow is ready to provide oil and wheat at cheap rates if Pakistan contacted them.
