Pakistan parliaments likely to dissolve on August 9, before its 5 years term end

By The South Asia Times

ISLAMABAD - Pakistan's lower house of parliament, the National Assembly is likely to be dissolved on August 9, three days before its constitutional term which ends on August 12.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Thursday informed his allies regarding his decision during a dinner hosted in the premier house in honor of the outgoing lawmakers, Daily Dawn reported.

Dissolution of the assembly before its constitutional term will pave way for the ruling alliance to get more time in the upcoming elections.

The terms of the current assembly will be completed on August 12 and according to the country’s constitution, the elections should be held within 60 days but if the premier dissolves the assembly prematurely, it would give the election commission 90 days to hold the next elections.

Analysts believed the decision to dissolve the assembly prematurely show the ruling alliance's fear to get much time in holding the next elections as currently the main opposition party of former prime minister Imran Khan, Pakistan Tehrik-e-Insaf (PTI) enjoys public support and Khan could easily defeat the 13 parties ruling PDM alliance in the upcoming elections.

However, the PDM government registered nearly 200 cases against Khan and every day he is appearing in courts, which could impact his election campaign. While Khan also claimed that PDM and its supporters could arrest and keep him in jail to win the elections.
