Deputy speaker saved gov’t from defeat in Pakistani parliament

ISLAMABAD - Following a chaotic and embarrassing situation, the Deputy Speaker of the National Assembly has saved the government from defeat in the parliament after opposition and treasury members opposed the ruling party lawmaker's bill.
On Tuesday, when a ruling party Pakistan Muslim League- Nawaz (PMLN) lawmaker Tahira Aurangzeb moved a bill for the establishment of Akhuwat Institute in Kasur district, the Education Minister Rana Tanvir Hussain from PMLN also support her bill but opposition and some treasury members opposed the move.
PMLN ally Pakistan Peoples Party lawmaker Qadir Khan Mandokhel accused the minister of discrimination as earlier he opposed Mandokhel's bill to set up Babrak Institute of Science, Art, and Technology in his province.
When Deputy Speaker Zahid Akram Durrani move the bill for counting in the parliament, the treasury benches members opposed it but suddenly Durrani announced a break for 20 minutes and later adjourned the house till Wednesday to save the government from defeat, according to Dawn.
The ruling alliance passed a dozen legislations during the last few days as the term of the current parliament is going to be completed on August 12.
Ahead of parliament dissolution, the government passed several controversial legislations which are widely criticized by the public.
