After 160 years: Pakistan proposes over 700 amendment in criminal law left by British in sub-continent

ISLAMABAD (TSAT) - Pakistan on Thursday has completed the draft of over 700 amendments in the country criminal laws to provide easy justice to its people.

 

The proposed amendments, presented by the Law Minister Faroogh Nasim during an event which was attended by the Prime Minister Imran Khan in capital Islamabad.

 

According to the Law Minister the proposed amendments will change the whole existing system left by British in the sub-continent.

 

The Pakistan Penal Code known as PPC, had prepared by Lord Macaulay in 1860 during the British rule on the sub-continent.

 

“These amendments in the criminal laws and over 700 amendments had completely overhauled the existing legal system,” he said.

 

Under the proposed amendment, judges, police and other relevant officials with legal system make accountable to provide speedy justice and build public trust on the legal system.

 

After the approval from parliament, the court will decide the criminal cases within mention period from four to nine months and government will ensure to provide budget to the police station level.

“The judge will be answerable to the High Court if he or she not finalising the case within nine months,” he added

 

 

Under the propose amendment the video makers will not be mandatory to appear before the court in murder or rape cases.

 

He give an example of a case in Balochistan, where two year back a powerful local politician hit and run over on a police official and killed him but he didn’t convicted because the video maker was not ready to appeared before the court.

 

“For decades, powerful people took advantage of the loopholes in law, they getting reliefs from court but poor people lying in prisons,” said Parliamentary Secretary Maleeka Bokahri and adding now every Pakistani will get speedy justice after these amendments.

 

Prime Minister Khan praised the efforts of his team for preparing the amendment and said the massive amendments would help to change the existing system based on injustce and simplify procedure for common man in way to justice.

 

“For the first time any government making changes in the law made in British rule to bring improvement to dispensation of justice and ensure speedy justice for common people,” Khan said

 

While quoted a hadith of Prophet Muhammad (Peace be upon Him) Khan said that many earlier nations were destroyed where there was separate laws for the powerful and the weak.
