Fatal ICE Shooting in Minneapolis Sparks Backlash, Massive Protests in New York

By The South Asia Times

NEW YORK - A woman was fatally shot by an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agent on Wednesday in Minneapolis, New York, igniting nationwide outrage and sparking a massive march in New York demanding ICE’s removal from the city.

President Donald Trump defended the shooting, claiming the woman had attempted to run over ICE agents’ vehicle. However, video footage and eyewitness accounts suggest she was reportedly trying to leave the scene when agents fired, contradicting the president’s claim.

The incident has provoked sharp criticism on social media, with many condemning ICE’s tactics and calling for accountability.

Journalist Rula Jebreal described the event as “state-sanctioned murder,” saying masked ICE agents killed Renee Nicole Good and denied her medical care.

Congresswoman Ayanna Pressley demanded accountability, stating that Republicans had blocked efforts to subpoena records and footage related to the incident, calling it a failure to uphold law and order.

Public reactions on social media have been sharply divided. Commentator Kaizen D. Asiedu said, “Renee's death in Minneapolis is tragic… but see it for what it is, not what you want it to be. You can hate ICE, but blocking officers then speeding off in a 2-ton vehicle is irrational. She rolled the dice. Sadly, she died.”

Meanwhile, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security defended the actions of ICE officers. DHS described the event as “an act of domestic terrorism,” claiming the woman weaponized her vehicle against law enforcement and that officers acted to save their lives.

Secretary Kristi Noem reiterated support for ICE, saying the agency and President Trump “will always have the backs of law enforcement” and that officers continue to “get dangerous criminals off the streets of Minneapolis.”

The shooting has intensified the ongoing debate over ICE’s role in the U.S., particularly in sanctuary cities, with protesters arguing that the agency engages in overly aggressive tactics and disproportionately targets immigrant communities.

The New York march drew thousands calling for the abolition of ICE or a full review of its policies and practices.

As authorities investigate the circumstances of Renee Nicole Good’s death, the incident continues to highlight the tension between federal immigration enforcement and local communities advocating for the protection of residents and civil liberties.
